Elstree Studios lights spark speculation among Watford residents

21st October 2011

Was it a bird? Was it a plane? Was it UFOs cascading across the sky above Watford last night? Unfortunately for the amateur conspiracy theorist, the answer is no.

In-depth investigations from a crack team of undercover Watford Observer reporters this morning revealed the anti-climactic truth – the lights were being beamed from nearby Elstree Studios.

Towering lights shot up into the night sky on Wednesday and Thursday evening to mark events at the famous film location of Star Wars, Indiana Jones and more recently The King’s Speech.

The unusual night-time sight sparked somewhat of a social media frenzy, with people logging onto Twitter and Facebook to speculate on the source of the illuminations.

Laura Paxman from the Elstree Studios management office confirmed this morning the lights were set up to promote two evenings of high-profile events at the filming location.

On Wednesday, celebrities including Katie Price and Dane Bowers gathered for the premiere of Paranormal Activity 3 from the grounds of the studios’ Big Brother house.

Popstar Michael Buble was also on-site filming a Christmas show for ITV on Wednesday and Thursday evening with celebrity guests.
